Also, great idea to use French Hussar uniforms in terms of costume design, as not only were they the best looking / distinctive (with all the braid and the coat worn over the left shoulder), but also the French Hussar Regiments (units) had different colour combinations, so they could make each character look different and recognisable.
Great scene, of course sword moves would be stylised for the camera angles and scenes / dramatic purposes, plus the actors didn't have stand-ins, and not a lot of time to learn the moves as it was a low budget film.
Some of (Carradine's) poor technique is in the characters of the short story. He's actually a good swordsman but in the first duel he was trying his best not to kill or permanently disable his enemy. The other man is no great shakes as a swordsman but strong and a vicious fighter- hence the poor technique overall.
what was that movie about modern (1970 era) people fighting with swords and sabres for sport and gambling with rich sponsors? they used european style duelling swords not asian. Movie used real fencers in the fight scenes.

He's using that saber like a cleaver. That's not how they were used at all. In real life if you were swinging a sabre like an axe you would be dead the first time you tried it against someone actually trained in military sabre fencing. I'm sure the movie was great but damn that hat to hurt their hands.
Minute a guy mentions " swords" PHYSICALLY SET ABOUT him with your fists and save someone's, ANYONE'S life.

Their technique isn't very good.
